There are so many things going on any every person’s life. During that time anyone can have issues which leads to self-doubt, low-confidence, anxiety and depression.
What is Imposter Syndrome ??
Impostor syndrome is a psychological pattern in which one doubts one’s accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a “fraud”.
Anyone can feel this syndrome in their daily life.
Characteristics
Some of the common signs of imposter syndrome include:
Self-doubt
fear of failure
Fear that you won’t live up to expectations
Overachieving
Sabotaging your own success
Self-doubt
Setting very challenging goals and feeling disappointed when you fall short
Two side of imposter syndrome.
First, as a lack of motivation. Person who feels this, have issues with self-doubt, low-confidence etc. Even though person know that he/she is more capable as compare to other in there respective field.
Sometimes person also feel anxiety or depression related problems.
Second, as a fuel of motivation. This usually comes at a cost in the form of constant anxiety. Person keeps working on any given task or on particular topic to get things done, or understand that thing. Person might over-prepare or work much harder than necessary to make sure that everything is correct.
Ex-1: if anyone have a presentation tomorrow, then that person is worried about it and keeps practicing about it.
Ex-2: same thing goes with interview also. If anyone have interview then that person is also nervous about it, and if it’s first interview then that person is more worried about it.
Sometime person who feels this, unable to sleep at night because of tension and anxiety. It’s whole vicious cycle which leads us to self-doubt, low-confidence, anxiety.
Eventually, these feelings worsen anxiety and may lead to depression. People who experience impostor syndrome also tend not to talk about how they are feeling with anyone and struggle in silence, just as do those with social anxiety disorder.
Identifying imposter syndrome.
Impostor experience may be accompanied by anxiety, stress, rumination, or depression.
While impostor syndrome is not a recognized disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Studies suggest that more than 70% of people experience the impostor syndrome at some point in their lives.
5 Different Types of Imposter Syndrome.
The Perfectionist: Perfectionists are never satisfied and always feel that their work could be better. Rather than focus on their strengths, they tries to fix their flaws or mistakes. This often leads to a great deal of self-pressure and high amounts of anxiety.
The Superhero: Superhero often push themselves to work harder and harder to measure up. But this is just a false cover-up for their insecurities, and the work overload may harm not only their own mental health, but also their relationships with others.
The Expert: Expert always try to learn something new and never satisfied with their level of knowledge and understanding. Even though they are highly skilled in their field, they underrate their own expertise.
The Natural Genius: Natural Genius set extensively high goal for themselves, and feels self-doubt when they don’t succeed on their first try.
The Soloist: Soloist prefer to work alone. They also rejects offer of assistance. THis type of people think that asking for help is sign of weakness or incompetence.
Overcome imposter syndrome.
To overcome your imposter syndrome,
Share your feelings with other.
Focus on small task, don’t try to achieve every goal at same time.
Question your thoughts about does this things really matters to me or not.
Stop comparing yourself with others and try to focus on your work or life.
Use social media platforms as you are. Don’t try to pretend that you are different in real life and social media life.
Stop fighting for your feelings. If you have feelings express it.
No matter how much you feel like you don’t belong, don’t stop for archive your goal. “Never Give Up”
Do something that you like. for ex: singing, painting, dancing, traveling, listen music etc. This things helps you to gain your confidence.
Stay in contact with your family and friends.
